Mate Tea is one of the more uncommon and special teas you can have. This Argentinian national drink, is becoming ever more popular. It is produced from the leaves of yerba mate, ilex paraguariensis, so it’s not technically a tea. Traditionally, it is prepared in a calabash gourd and drunk through a metal straw, a bombilla.
Mate leaves can be brewed several times with boiling hot water. Long hailed in South American countries as a healthy, energizing social beverage, in recent years the popularity of Yerba Mate has finally begun to take hold around the world as an alternative to tea and coffee. This roasted Yerba Mate has a pleasingly astringent, smooth, roasty character that comes from the roasting process the leaves undergo after plucking, a process similar to coffee roasting. It makes a perfect pick me up in the morning since it contains more caffeine than coffee or tea, and is also rich in Vitamin C and other naturally occurring nutrients and antioxidants. It has a toasty, comforting chicory note that takes milk and sugar well.
It is said in parts of South America “when one offers Matte, he offers friendship.”
Please note that all Mate varieties contain caffeine; we would not suggest it as a nightcap.
